I Shall Not Want

Thanksgiving is right around the corner. It is a good time to remember that the secret to happiness and the moral life is gratitude. A few days ago, I received a video of an address/testimony of one of my most courageous former students. He has a story to tell that will show you what gratitude looks like in his journey of faith and his connection to God’s will.
David Gallagher was a highly recruited football player in eighth grade among local prep schools. He chose to come to EA. We met when he was in tenth grade. He came to my office and began by simply saying, “I am afraid!” That began a journey between us that included the reading of the Psalm 23rd as a central theme. “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” His home life was highly dysfunctional as his father was an alcoholic. He came from a working-class neighborhood and had a rough transition to an independent school. Football was an outlet! He worked hard in school and on weekends was a waiter in a restaurant. He was a standout player who went on to play football and lacrosse in college.
Later in life I heard from him as he was in the armed forces and traveling as a citizen by himself to Islamabad. As the plane was descending he called me and said that he was about to do the scariest thing that he had ever done. We talked. He was chosen by the military to travel incognito into that city alone for an assignment and would be housed in a safe house. He was dealing with black marketeers who, at times, had a gun in his face. He spent a year there alone on assignment. He is now an executive in a company.
Fast forward. I heard from him again. He wanted me to see an address that he was going to give at his church.
David knows that I am sharing his story on this blog. We talked at length yesterday about his new life. You will know the meaning of gratitude when you watch him give his address. It is attached below! It will help you to have an attitude of gratitude as you go into your Thanksgiving holiday making it a holy day. David’s address starts at 44:20 on the video below. It takes a few moments for the video to start.
